Close to the heart

CNN.com - Jakarta hotel bombing kills 10 - Aug. 5, 2003

Another news story close to my heart. Back when I worked in Jakarta the office I was in was literally across the street from this hotel. At the time it was still under construction and was meant to be the most luxurious hotel in the capital. I walked home at night to the sounds of its construction. My condo was a block away from it and within the fringes of the Mega Kuningan district.

People toss around the cliche about how the world is a more dangerous place. I never realized how true this was until this month. It's so easy to give into the fear now, to just sink into a permanent state of siege. This is the world that Bush and his cronies have thrust us into. We bought into this the day America declared war on the rest of the world. And we are the ones reaping the storm, bearing the brunt of the anger and indignation.

What sort of a world is this?
