Keep what Ya Got

Saw Ian Brown last night at the Academy in Brixton. Van and I were surprised that such a legendary (in the UK anyway) icon of independent music would sound like... well, like utter crap. Even Noel Gallagher sounds better than him vocally, and that's saying something.

As he finished his first song he yelled to the crowd, "any requests?" I was tempted to say "Singing lessons" but was afraid the cultists might string me up by the rafters. By the way, Brixton Academy is a fantastic venue, much like the Apollo but with more atmosphere. Or maybe it was the 10 billion screaming fans.

We had fun anyway, his set was a fantastic mix of Stone Roses classics (not Love Spreads though, which was a disappointment) and songs from his new album. Which we kinda liked. Considering.

Ah well, at least he proves the age-old truism that you don't need talent to make it big in music.
